At One Bear Mountain, we know how wonderful Greater Victoria is. Our location is one of the reasons our real estate project is so popular.

It’s clear we aren’t the only ones. The secret is more than out on how great Victoria is. Condé Nast Traveller magazine again put our gem of a city atop its annual Readers’ Choice Awards as the best small city in the world.

This is no small feat. The 2024 list was announced in October and is an impressive one that includes popular international destinations like Porto, Florence, Puerto Vallarta, San Sebastian and others.

Speaking with Postmedia, Paul Nursey, chief executive of Destination Greater Victoria, the destination marketing organization tasked with selling Victoria to the world, said the top spot is a very big deal.

“It means that Victoria, as a meetings and leisure destination, is truly up there with some of the most interesting and unique places in the world,” said Nursey. “And I think for us what it really means is our brand is now clearly distinct from Vancouver, Seattle and other places in the Pacific Northwest.”

To praise the city and summarize the win, Condé Nast wrote, “A popular day trip from Vancouver, British Columbia’s capital city well deserves a visit of its own. Arrive via one of the world’s most scenic ferry rides across Swartz Bay and check in to the bucket list-worthy Fairmont Empress, where the Fairmont Gold rooms include access to a private waterfront lounge. With a reputation as the most British town in Canada, most restaurants and hotels offer a proper high tea. Check out the Venus Sophia, which offers baked goods. If you’re seeking a more rural escape, disconnect in the ancient forests with a road trip on Vancouver Island.”

The rankings were determined by a survey of 575,048 readers that used a standard five-point scale, nominated cities were judged on a set of criteria, and the average of these ratings determined final scores. The full list and why they were included can be found on the Condé Nast Traveller website.

The magazine isn’t shy about showing love to our wonderful island. Other Island destinations have been recognized in the past, including the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, which clinched the best resort in the U.S. and Canada award.

Condé Nast, which publishes numerous magazines, including Vogue, GQ and The New Yorker, told Postmedia its Traveller magazine reaches more than 20 million print and web readers every month and more than 40 million people on its social media channels.
